Confirmation is an important step in our spiritual journey. When you were born into this world, you could not respond to Jesus love for you as a baby. And yet Jesus still loved you dearly. The Bible tells us that we were known even before we were born and that God made us into the person we are…
Psalms 139:13-14 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; (NIV)
Many babies are baptized in the church. For United Methodists, we believe that this baptism is a symbol of God’s love and commitment to us for the rest of our lives. And even though we cannot respond to God yet because we are just babies, God is already loving us.
Baptism signifies before God and the church that we believe in God’s love for us and that we intend to raise and teach this baby about God, about His son Jesus Christ, and about the church. Through infant Baptism, we also commit to teach this baby the Word of God and to support the family of this baby as they strive to prepare this child for the day that he or she can stand before the church and make a public profession of faith in Jesus Christ for themselves.
That day is almost here for you! And all the years of Children’s Ministry, Sunday School classes, VBS, Youth Ministry Discipleship, Worship Services, Bible Teaching, and all that your parents and others along the way have shared with you about the Christian faith has helped to bring you to this point in your journey of faith. Confirmation and membership in the church is not the end but rather it is the beginning of a new journey of faith as a devoted member of Christ’s church. Before you can become a full member of His church, there are some final studies that will help you remember and understand better what it means to be a member of the church and to pursue your faith in Christ for yourself.
That’s right, it’s time for you to take ownership in your faith and as a young adult - you are old enough to make the decision to follow Jesus, tend to your faith, seek to know Him more, and allow Him to use you in ministry in the church. You are old enough to let Jesus help you discover your special gifts and abilities for ministry! And you are old enough to understand what it means to make a commitment to Jesus and to join the church. Confirmation is the final step in your preparation before making that public profession of your faith in Jesus Christ and joining His church.
We are so proud of you and we look forward to all that Jesus will do in your life to make a difference in this world! We look forward to welcoming you as a full member of the church and continuing to support you in your journey of faith! Let the confirming of your faith begin!
